On August 18, 2023, vocalist Martina DaSilva will release Chega de Saudade and Prisoner of Love, a double single from her upcoming LP “The 1905,” filmed at the acclaimed Portland jazz club of the same name.
With Saudade + Prisoner, DaSilva continues the rollout for the fourth volume in her prolific “Living Room” visual record series, a window onto what jazz looks and sounds like today. The vocalist trades her regular filming location, the cozy living room in her Manhattan apartment, for the stage of The 1905 in Portland, bringing along some of New York’s best musicians for the ride.
“This album is a collaboration with The 1905 and the local community,” shares DaSilva. “The first time I came to play here, I was so taken by the atmosphere, I said to Aaron, I wish there was a club like this in New York! We finished our show and we all just stuck around, because the food was so good and we were all having a great time.
“I’m so happy with how this record turned out,” she continues, “and it’s only possible because of the atmosphere Aaron has created, where I feel as at home as I do in my own living room. Aaron is all about building relationships and building up his home. It’s an act of love for his own community, and it’s a very generous thing to do.”
Founded in 2016, The 1905 has evolved from a local pizza joint into a vibrant center of the Portland music scene, becoming a destination for some of the biggest names in jazz. In January 2023, Down Beat named The 1905 one of the best jazz venues in the world. With DaSilva’s album, founder Aaron Barnes takes his mission a step further, partnering with artists and providing financial support to record at the club, and offering patrons a music experience they can bring home with them.
“I love what Martina does,” shares Barnes. “I put my trust in musicians, like her, who have a vision of the future.”
“I’m in this because I love the music, I love the food, and I love bringing people together. I love what we do as a community.”
